Important or Popular
Which would you choose if you could only be one?
Important
Popular
Popular in real life can help you win elections, can create a fan base, can create opportunities that can lead to money, fame, and other perks.
The downside?
Popular is temporary. You can't have the number one book, movie or song forever.
There is always someone who will replace you.
And so being popular isn't the same as being important.
Important people make a difference.
You can be important to just one person and it would not lessen your importance.
I bet you are important to someone. It could be a friend, a spouse, or a child. All it takes is one.
What does this have to do with Social Media?
Last week I was looking at a couple of websites that measure the popularity and importance of people on Twitter and on Facebook, and was surprised.
There are a few local folks who have tens of thousands of friends and followers yet I rarely hear about them nor do I know why they are popular.
It really doesn't matter.
Be you.
Be yourself.
Be genuine.
Be social online and offline.
Be Important, because you are.
If I had to choose just one...
I choose important.
